Travel Tidbits
Opinion Research reported in a survey for the AAA conducted during early December that 7 out of 10 adults plan to travel at least as much in 2003 as they did in 2002. The findings further revealed that 60% of Americans believe that the economy will be stronger in 2003. If however, America goes to war with Iraq 52% will not change their travel plans, 17% would travel a little less and 23% would travel a lot less.
According to a recent travel poll conducted by the Travel Industry Association of America, the shorter travel planning cycle trend continues. At least one "last minute trip" was planned by 64% of the respondents within two weeks of departure. Only 1-2 days planning was required by 25% of those surveyed and 33% planned their trips 3-7 days ahead. Of note also is that almost 17% of last minute travelers report using the Internet to make travel arrangements. It wasn't a surprise that these trips are quick and close to home with 66% reporting locations visited were located within 500 miles of their home, 16% between 500-1000 miles and only 15% over 1000 miles distant.
A Travel Holiday magazine survey of readers on its web site reported that 73% of the travelers surveyed plan to spend more on vacations in 2003 than in 2002.
Bear Stearns predicts that third-party electronic distributor-booking sites will soon out draw hotel company sites and that over $15 billion worth of hotel rooms will be booked online by 2006, a substantial increase from $3.8 billion in 2002.
Another Travel Industry Association of America travel poll conducted on the use of travel agents had some shocking news. While 26% of Americans reported using a travel agent to book a trip during the last three years, a serious decline in the use of these professional services has occurred. Approximately 54 million American travelers used travel agents-a 32% decline since 1999 which is attributed to the increased use of the Internet to perform these functions.
