Property Renewal Reminder
Very shortly you will receive forms and instructions for you to use when preparing your submission for the renewal of the RHA Property Program. The renewal date is February 28, 2003 and updated information is needed in the RHA office no later than December 6th. RHA expects the difficult property conditions to continue and because of this we plan to be in the markets in the first week of January.
Builder's Risk Coverage Re-Fresher!
This is just a reminder about the Builder's Risk Coverage in the RHA Property Program.
If you participate in the RHA Property Program you have automatic Builder's Risk coverage, with no additional premium, on renovations or additions to any property insured under that program providing that the cost of the renovations or additions does not exceed $5 million.
If the completed value of the project is to exceed $5 million, the project must be reported in advance to RHA for underwriters' review and acceptance. Additional premium will be charged at that time.
There is no automatic Builders Risk coverage on renovations or additions to premises not insured under the RHA Property Program. If you are planning a project on premises not already insured under the RHA Property Program, or building a new facility, please contact RHA well in advance of the start up construction date.
Please contact RHA if you have any questions about the RHA Builders Risk coverage.

Unemployment Benefits May be Available to Independent Contractors
As reported in an article in the September 2002 issue of Hospitality Law, individuals that are paid on commission may be eligible to receive unemployment compensation if certain criteria are met regarding their treatment on the job. The article offered the following guidance on how to tell the difference between employees and independent contractors as established in Internal Revenue Service RevenueRule 87-41.

- You train employees. Independent contractors train themselves.

- Employees work designated hours. Independent contractors set their own schedules.
- Employees work just for you. Independent contractors may have several employers.
- Employees work on your property. Independent contractors may work anywhere.
- Employees regularly report to you. Independent contractors don't.
- Employees are paid by the hour or receive a salary. Independent contractors are paid by the job.
